BRUSSELS — Some 120,358 Belgian families who have asked for a discount on their heating oil bill will receive about EUR 100 back from the federal government.
Members of the public are able to request a refund on VAT taxes paid, newspaper 'Het Gazet van Antwerpen' reported on Friday.
The families — who bought their heating oil between 1 June and 30 September — will receive the rebate by the end of the year.
The full amount to be repaid is EUR 11.6 million or on average EUR 97.53 per household.
Finance Minister Didier Reynders said during a press conference on Friday the end bill for the government will be EUR 25 million.
The Finance Ministry received almost 250,000 applications between 1 June and 30 September this year.
In the meantime, families who bought heating oil after 1 October will receive a combined EUR 45 million rebate.
They receive a direct discount of up 17.35 percent on their heating oil bills, newspaper 'Het Nieuwsblad' reported.
The discount will be paid for by the government and is equal to excises and VAT taxes. The discount is designed to offset the high cost of oil for Belgian households.
