The European Commission is due to unveil ambitious plans to turn the European Union into the most environmentally-friendly economy in the world

Brussels  - The European Commission is due to unveil ambitious plans to turn the European Union into the most environmentally-friendly economy in the world.

In an eagerly awaited document, the Brussels executive is to tell the EU's 27 member states what they have to do in order to cut the bloc's emissions of carbon dioxide (CO2) to 20 per cent below 1990 levels by 2020.

The document will enshrine in EU law a pledge made by government leaders in March to slash the emission of the gas most linked to global warming.

The commission is also to issue binding goals for the use of renewable sources of energy - such as wind or solar power - and plant-based bio-fuels.

The climate and energy package, which has already divided industry and environmentalists, will need to be approved by member states before it can come into force.
