   BRUSSELS, March 14, 2008 (AFP) - European Union leaders began a two-day
summit in Brussels Thursday focused on climate change, employment and the
economy, as well as controversial French plans for a new Mediterranean Union.
The meeting, hosted by the EU's Slovenian presidency in Brussels, got under
way shortly before 6:00 pm (1700 GMT).
On Friday, the leaders will turn to the turmoil on the world's financial
markets, aiming to boost confidence as the dollar plunges and oil prices
sky-rocket.
