BRUSSELS — Defending champions Club Brugge sacked coach Jan Ceulemans on Monday, replacing him with former Lierse and FC Brussels coach Emilio Ferrera.

Club Brugge has been struggling for form this year and were embarrassed by a 4-1 defeat at the hands of AA Gent on Saturday.

The title holder is out of contention for this year's championship and will also fail to grab second place. Club Brugge will therefore miss out on next season's Champions League.

But the sacking of Ceulemans comes as a surprise because Club Brugge rarely sacks its coaches and Ceulemans has a sparkling history at the club.

Brugge is now in third position and wants to retain that position to qualify for UEFA Cup football.

There are five matches left until the end of the Belgian First Division season.
