Belgian police have detained a 60-year-old Scot who is suspected of sending a letter containing death threats against the Dowager Queen Fabiola.

Queen Fabiola is the wife of the late King Boudewijn.

The Scot was detained in the seaside resort of Koksijde (West Flanders). He is married to a woman from Wallonia.

He stands accused of sending a letter containing death threats against Queen Fabiola to the daily La Dernière Heure.

In the letter it says that the Dowager Queen will be shot dead using a crossbow on 21 July, the National Holiday.

On Tuesday the Scot's home was searched. Afterwards he was led away for questioning.

It remains unclear whether he has confessed.
