BRUSSELS — Flemish Interest leader Filip Dewinter has called his extreme right party an "Islam phobic" organisation in an interview with the US daily newspaper 'Jewish Week'.

Dewinter said Europe is becoming just as dangerous for Jews as Egypt or Algeria, turning blame away from his party to the Islamic faith.

He also said the Flemish Interest is no different than its predecessor, the Flemish Block, which was convicted for racism and xenophobia, newspaper 'De Morgen' reported on Wednesday.

According to Dewinter, the separation of powers no longer exists in Belgium and there are few judges who can withstand political pressure.

"The administration of justice in Belgium is an instrument in the hands of the government," he said.

It is the second time in recent months that the candidate Antwerp mayor has given an interview to a Jewish newspaper. At the end of August, he was interviewed by top Israeli newspaper 'Haaretz'.

At that time, Dewinter said Nazi collaborator Staf Declercq was an "historical leader" of his party, but gave a long argument to explain that the Flemish Interest was not anti-Semitic and was therefore an objective ally of the Jewish community.

In his latest interview, Dewinter used the same reasoning. Upon questioning why Jews should vote for a xenophobic party, Dewinter denied the assertion the Flemish Interest was xenophobic.

Instead, he said if the party had to be described as having a phobia, he said the party should be known as having "islamophobia".

"Yes, we're afraid of Islam. The Islamisation of Europe is a frightening thing. If this historical process continues, the Jews will be the first victims. Europe will become as dangerous for them as Egypt or Algeria," Dewinter said.

"So, I return your question. Should Jews vote for a party that wants to stop the spread of Islam in Europe?"
