BRUSSELS — Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht welcomed on Thursday the death of the al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi.
Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Maliki had earlier announced to sustained applause at a press conference on Thursday that al-Zarqawi has been "eliminated".
The US said he was killed in an air raid near Baquba.
"The man is personally responsible for countless attacks, kidnappings and murders in Iraq and elsewhere," De Gucht said.
"In my eyes, this is an important victory in the fight against terrorism, which of course is not finished."
The Liberal VLD minister also stressed the importance of the stabilisation of Iraq in restoring the safety and prosperity of the population to a normal level.
"Al-Qaeda is a movement that thrives exceptionally well in unstable environments," he said.
"People try and hinder the normalisation of Iraq by creating terror. The fact that the civilian population is the first victim forms no impediment; in fact the opposite [is true].
"The Iraqi population may be pleased over the disappearance of this terrorist leader."
