BRUSSELS — The suspected kidnapper of the nine-year-old David tried to commit suicide in his jail cell at Lantin on Sunday night.
Benoît D. was taken to the Lantin jail, near Liège, because a family member works at the Verviers jail.
But several hours before the transfer, D. tried to commit suicide by slashing his arteries.
He had unscrewed a light bulb and had smashed it to use as a knife. But guards were quickly on the scene and performed first aid.
A doctor was called in to stitch the suspect's wound.
D. has been officially charged with kidnapping, indecent assault and attempted manslaughter.
A family friend, D. took the victim, David, for a drive in his car in Verviers on Friday night, but allegedly indecently assaulted the boy.
David suffered a serious head injury in the attack and was left for dead on an isolated country road until a farmer and his wife found him on Saturday.
David is now gradually recovering after undergoing an operation on Sunday in the Peltzer-La Tourelle Hospital.
Davis suffered a double cranial fracture and despite the successful operation, doctors are reluctant to make any statements about his condition.
