BRUSSELS — The mayor of the seaside resort of Knokke-Heist has denied he is implicated in a building fraud scandal in the well-to-do West Flemish town.

The denial came after the municipal secretary and an executive of the real estate firm Compagnie Le Zoute were remanded in custody by Brugge Court on Friday.

The two suspects are facing a corruption investigation into the issuing of building permits in Knokke-Heist.

The Compagnie Le Zoute executive is accused of offering holidays and cash bribes to influence decisions made by the municipal secretary over several planning permit applications.

Knokke-Heist has opted to suspend the municipal secretary while investigations continue.

But Mayor Leopold Lippens has denied allegations he knew about the alleged corruption.
