BRUSSELS — The Brussels ring road will be widened in the next few years, Flemish Public Works Minister Kris Peeters has said.

Extra lanes will be added to the ring road between Zellik and Vilvoorde and traffic on the ring road between the E19 and the E40 in Zaventem will be separated.

Parallel lanes will be constructed on the most traffic jam-affected parts of the ring road that give access to Zaventem Airport.

This means that local and pass-through traffic will be separated, news service VRT reported.

Works will also be carried on the Leonard junction and the A12 between Meise and Westrode.

The aim is to improve safety on the ring road and create a better flow of traffic, easing access to Brussels airport.

The road works are expected to start next year.
