26 November 2007, BRUSSELS - In the Brussels municipality of Elsene (Ixelles) the man arrested after having taken 10 kindergarten children from their school playground to the supermarket, has been released conditionally.

BRUSSELS - In the Brussels municipality of Elsene (Ixelles) the man arrested after having taken 10 kindergarten children from their school playground to the supermarket, has been released conditionally.

The man had taken the children to a supermarket to buy them candy.  Twenty minutes later he brought them back to school.

The kindergarten teacher had not noticed that the 10 children went missing. Only when she saw the candy did she realise that something was wrong.  The man took the children to the Delhaize supermarket to buy candy The man, a city employee, has a criminal record, but not for any sexual or indecency offences, contrary to earlier reports.

He appeared before the examining magistrate on Friday. The public prosecutor wanted his arrest on charges of the kidnapping of children between the ages of 2 and 5.

The examining magistrate did not follow the public prosecutor and decided to release the man conditionally.

The man has a restraining order and may not go within 150 metres of a school.  He has been placed under psychiatric supervision and must do at least 2 hours of sports per week. 

The school has started a disciplinary investigation into the incident.
