BRUSSELS — Three asylum seekers on a hunger strike in the Saint Bonifacius Church in Ixelles (Elsene) were taken to hospital on Monday night.
After undergoing examinations, the hunger strikers were allowed to return to the Brussels church. They are still refusing food.
Some of the hunger strikers stopped eating on 22 February, while others started the hunger strike 11 days ago, news service VRT reported. About 15 people are on a hunger strike.
The hunger strikers are demanding that immigration authorities approve their request for asylum, but Interior Minister Patrick Dewael has refused.
Leuven resident Pol Van Camp — who is also refusing to eat — said the condition of the hunger strikers is worsening.
The Saint Bonifacius Church has been occupied by asylum seekers and sympathisers since October last year in a protest against Belgium's asylum policies.
