BRUSSELS - Standard de Liège have lost their leading position after the 12th day of play. Club Brugge won at home against Zulte Waregem Saturday leapfrogging Liège into first place in the overall rankings.
The Jan Breydel Stadium in Brugge was the venue on Saturday for the West Flemish derby. It was a close duel but Brugge were able to deliver the goods at home beating Waregem by 1-0. The goalless draw by Standard pushed Brugge ahead to take the leading position.
The 26,000 fans cheered their home team on, but it was clear that the visitors were determined not to be a push-over.
Still, the home team got their only good break in the first half.
Jeroen Simaeys headed, Stijn Meert stopped the ball at the goal, but Dusan Djokic was right there for the rebound scoring for Brugge in the 34th minute.
9th consecutive win for Cercle
Cercle Brugge have won for the 9th time in a row, beating Mons in an away match. Cercle keep their third place in the overall standings after the 0-2 win. Five minutes into the match, Honour Gombami got past a hesitant Cédric Berthelin, scoring his 6th goal of the season.
Just before half-time, goal keeper Berthelin won the prize for what has been dubbed 'the stupidest red card of the season'. Berthelin picked up a headed ball by Roberto Mirri... but he was not in the penalty box!
Cercle were unable to take advantage of the one-man-down situation, and only succeeded in doubling their score just in the nick of time in the 90th minute with a goal by Kristof Snelders.
Anderlecht on way back
After the disappointing matches of the past weeks, Anderlecht had some rectifying to do, especially for their home fans.
Westerlo seemed to be just the right opponents for this task: the team have only won one match this season away.
Anderlecht were on the attack, but unable to cash in until after 20 minutes with a goal by Bart Goor.
Westerlo equalised, giving the Anderlecht fans cause to worry during half-time about the 1-1 score.
But the home team understood the stakes and although Westerlo tried to up the ante as well, Akin Serhat, with an assist from Goor, put Anderlecht ahead again. And in the last minutes of the match Akin Serhat sealed the victory with a final score of 3-1.
Second victory for Sint Truiden
Just in the nick of time, Sint Truiden managed their second win of the season. Two penalty shots for the Limburg team and it was curtains for Ghent. Sint Truiden had ball possession most of the first half. Ghent however posed the biggest threat.
The action was in the second half. Dominic Foley scored for Ghent and just 2 minutes later Cephas Chimedza equalised on a penalty shot. Another penalty shot goal by Chimedza in the 90th minute sealed the victory for Sint Truiden.
