Childcare reform decree approved

The government of Flanders has finally approved the decree to facilitate reforms in respect of  preschool child care. This decree implies a gradual and profound facelift for child care during the next few years. In view of Flanders’ current shortage of child care facilities, the Welfare Minister of the government of Flanders, Jo Vandeurzen CD&V, earlier announced that an additional 5.000 facilities were needed by 2016 to meet the target of 50 places for 100 children in less than three years. Childcare makes it possible for parents to work, complements parental upbringing and offers more opportunities for children irrespective of their origin or background. The decree will be tabled in the Flemish Parliament before final decisions are made in pursuance of the decree and by 2013 at the earliest it will become effective.
