BRUSSELS – On Thursday around 2.30 p.m., a young Iraki girl fell about 4 metres from a window of the open asylum seekers’ centre Totem in Arendonk. She broke her arm and was taken to the Elisabethziekenhuis in Turnhout. This information was provided to Belga by the Kempen Noord-Oost local police.

All indications are that it was an accident. The child apparently climbed on to a stool next to the window, which was protected by mosquito netting fixed with tape. She probably leaned against it and then fell through the window.

The child is in better condition than was originally expected. If there are no complications with the broken arm, she may be discharged on Thursday evening. She and her family have been in the asylum seekers’ centre since early May.
