BRUSSELS - The Spanish tenor José Carreras has invited the girls choir Scala from Aarschot in the province of Flemish Brabant, to perform with him during a New Year's programme.

The 'José Carreras Gala' will be broadcast on 13 December on the German channel ARD. The annual New Year's concert is viewed by about 10 million people every year. Scala will perform one of the numbers from its recent CD 'One winged angel' during the live show. Scala will be accompanied by an 80 member symphony orchestra.

Carreras has also asked the Flemish group to sing a song with him. Katie Melua and Herbert Grönemeyer will also be in the show.

The tenor was stricken with leukaemia in the 1980s, but managed to beat the disease. Out of gratitude in 1988 he established a foundation which collects money in the fight against leukaemia. The 'José Carreras Gala' is an annual benefit concert for the foundation.
