BRUSSELS – Three federal Belgian deputies from the Socialist party have called for clearer rules on food labeling, Belga reported on Tuesday.

Colette Burgeon, Sophie Pecriaux and Veronique Ghenne have jointly put forward a motion for a resolution asking the government in particular to define a clear framework relating to the use of logos, labels and pictograms in advertising and in particular on food items.

Some labels for food items, such as certain organic products, are strictly regulated in Belgium.

But many others are not, leading to a hotch-potch of different labels that could be confusing or even misleading rather than helpful to consumers.
