On Monday afternoon a 28 year old woman was killed after being hit by falling decorative slabs from the front of a building on the Rue des Alexiens in Brussels.

Two decorative blocks from an office building came loose and fell onto two unsuspecting passersby. The lady, who worked in a bank close by, was caught on the head by the falling concrete. Emergency services managed to revive her at the scene, but she later died in hospital because of her injuries. The other person received serious ankle injuries and remains in hospital.

The Belgian magistrate, Freddy Thielemans (PS), went to the scene of the accident, where town services made a brief assessment of the building in question. According to Mr Thielemans, all of the other decorative blocks were fixed securely.

The face and the roof of the building had recently been renovated.
