BRUSSELS — The 19 Brussels communes have in total 600 different charges and taxes, the federation of technology firms Agoria said on Thursday.

The taxes range from taxes on light poles to street signs and computers, public news service VRT reported on Thursday.

Agoria said the taxes hinder economic growth and force firms away from the Brussels capital region.

The federation said the 19 communes operated more like 19 independent principalities that can do what they please.

"The communes can tax everything and are very creative in that; to a ridiculous degree," Agoria chief Dominque Michel said.

The federation urged for more consultation between the communes and a reduction in the tax rate by 30 percent.

It also urged for the transfer of powers to the capital region's government.

Agoria said the regional authority should determine what taxes can be imposed and to what extent.
