Brussels Airlines offers cheap flights within Europe
The Belgian airline is launching an airfare promotion to other European cities in September.25 August 2008
BRUSSELS -- Brussels Airlines will launch huge promotions on city trips within Europe starting in September.
According to the daily Het Laatste Nieuws, the Belgian airline is following the footsteps of large airliners such as Lufthansa and British Airways, which are offering reductions of up to 36 percent to fill their planes.
In recent months, flying has become more expensive following additional fuel taxes and the ballooning inflation. Consumers are more careful with their money and are hesitating about booking outside the summer holidays. Bookings are down 3 to 4 percent for city trips.
To counter this trend, Brussels Airlines is launching a huge advertising campaign with super promotional prices on city trips.
"We've noticed that such a media/advertising campaign with great prices can convince many people to take a trip," says a spokesman for Brussels Airlines.
A risky game
According to aviation economist Eddy Van de Voorde, Brussels Airlines is playing a risky game by trying to compete in the price war with the bigger airliners.
Van de Voorde says smaller airlines such as Brussels Airlines could risk being pushed out of the market place by launching a price war.
