BRUSSELS — The older brother of the main suspect in the murder of Joe Van Holsbeeck has been arrested, Belgian media reported on Thursday.
The brother is alleged to have given shelter before and after the murder to the 17-year-old suspect. He is also alleged to have had contact with the suspected killer by phone.
Meanwhile, the 17-year-old main suspect has also been arrested. He was detained on Thursday in Poland and is expected to be extradited to Belgium.
But the Brussels public prosecution spokesman, Jos Colpin, has decided to impose a media silence regarding the investigation.
The decision was taken after Justice Minister Laurette Onkelinx criticised the public prosecution office on Wednesday.
The Socialist PS minister said secrecy in an investigation is essential and that those who don't respect that are assisting the culprits.
Her statement came after the prosecution was caught out for wrongly claiming the suspected killers of Van Holsbeeck were of North African ancestry.
"Apparently, madam minister considers all statements that the prosecution makes as leaks," Colpin said.
"Moreover she thinks the information the public prosecution gives is not reliable. In these circumstances, we refuse to speak with the press any longer."
