BRUSSELS – A 12-year-old boy is still fighting for his life after being buried alive in sand at the beach in Blankenberge this weekend. The child from Charleroi was at the beach with his sister, her boyfriend and two other brothers.

The 12-year-old was digging a hole in the sand together with his 4-year-old brother. When the sister called to the boys to head home only the younger boy turned up.

The 12-year-old was nowhere to be seen. She and other beach visitors started digging in the sand where the boys had been playing and found him buried and unconscious.

"He must have been under the sand for some time because he had suffered a heart attack and was no longer breathing," says Philip Denoyette of the Blankenberge police.

A lifeguard resuscitated the boy. He is currently in critical condition in a hospital in Bruges.
