BLANKENBERGE – The 12-year-old boy who was accidentally buried in the sand on the beach in Blankenberg this weekend died in the hospital in Bruges on Tuesday morning. The Blankenberge police announced that this morning.

The 12-year-old was from Bergen, not Charleroi as was reported earlier, and came to Blankenberge with his 17-year-old sister and younger brother. They went to the beach near the Lustige Velodroom area. The two boys were digging a hole in the sand when the walls of the hole collapsed, burying the 12-year-old.

The boy's sister and other beachgoers had dug the boy out of the sand by the time the emergency services had arrived. He had no pulse and had stopped breathing. He was resuscitated but was kept in a coma in the intensive care unit, where he died Tuesday morning.
