BRUSSELS, January 17, 2009 (AFP) - Belgium's Queen Fabiola, the widow of king Baudouin and consort between 1960 and 1993, has been hospitalised for the second time in 10 days for bronchial pneumonia, the royal palace said Saturday.

"Queen Fabiola was hospitalised yesterday evening at the Saint-Jean Clinic in Brussels for bronchial pneumonia," a brief statement said.

Fabiola, who is 80 years old, had been operated last week. The RTL-TVI television said she underwent thyroid gland surgery.

The Spanish-born aristocrat was widely admired for her devout Roman Catholicism and involvement in social causes, especially those related to mental health, children's issues and the status of women.
