Belgium wins qualifier for Euro 2008

23 August 2007

BRUSSELS (AP) - Moussa Dembele scored two goals and Kevin Mirallas added another Wednesday to give Belgium a 3-2 win over Serbia in a European Championship qualifying match.

Dembele put the Red Devils ahead in the ninth minute when he slotted a low cross from Steven Defour into the net. Mirallas extended the lead in the 29th when he capitalised on a mistake by Serbia defender Nenad Kovacevic and sent a low curling ball into Vladimir Stojkovic's lower right corner.

Fiorentina midfielder Zdravko Kuzmanovic made it 2-1 in the 71st when he flicked a long pass from the left from Milos Krasic past Belgium goalkeeper Stijn Stijnen.

The Serbs moved forward in an effort to even the score, but three minutes before the end of regular time, Dembele scored again with a long shot after a quick counterattack down the right side.

In the last minute, Kuzmanovic made it 3-2 with a low kick into the left corner.

"This loss doesn't significantly affect our chances to qualify for the championships," Serbia coach Javier Clemente said.

Before the match, a Serbian soccer official appealed to fans to "demonstrate that racism, nationalism and all other forms national intolerance have no place in soccer stadiums." UEFA had warned Serbia that racist conduct by its fans could lead to expulsion from European competitions.
