Belgium to adopt European number plate system

Belgium is to introduce the European car number plate system from 1 July next year.

Currently, Belgium is the only one in Europe not to have adopted the European license plate system yet.

The date proposed for the change, 1 July 2010, coincides with the day on which Belgium is taking up the rotating European presidency.

The new car number plate will be longer than the one used in Belgium at present. On the left side, a B for Belgium is to appear in blue, followed by a combination of seven letters and figures in black on a light background.

Car owners will have to pay for the new number plate, but it is not clear how much. The proposal still has to be approved by the council of ministers, but that should not be a problem.
