Belgium takes up Security Council presidency
Belgium will hold the presidency of the United Nations Security Council for the month of August.1 August 2008
BELGIUM - On 1 August, Belgium takes up the rotating presidency of the United Nations Security Council again.
Belgium is a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council for a period of two years (2007-2008).
Belgium held the presidency already for a month in June 2007. This year, the one-month presidency is in August.
The country holding the presidency has the privilege of organising a special debate on current matters, but due to the holidays no debate has been planned so far.
The Belgian Foreign Office explains that no Interior Ministers would be ready to interrupt their holiday and travel to New York to take part in a debate. When Belgium held the presidency in 2007, it organised a debate on natural resources in conflict areas.
Belgium takes over the presidency from Vietnam and will pass it on to Burkina Faso in September.
