BRUSSELS - Belgian police have smashed a major criminal network suspected of smuggling illegal immigrants into European Union countries, it was reported on Tuesday.

The Belgian public prosecutor's office said police had arrested around 20 people in a series of dawn raids on motorway service stations across Belgium.

Most of the suspects were of Albanian origin, the prosecutor's office added.

Ahead of the arrests police rounded up 42 people whom they say had been smuggled into the EU by the Albanian gang.

The people smugglers brought the illegal immigrants into the EU via Greece and Italy, the prosecutor's office said.

It added that they were probably bound for the UK.

The gang charged EUR 2,600 a person to smuggle people into the EU, the prosecutors said.
