The World Customs Organisation (WCO) has taken action aiming to combat the illegal transport of rubbish between Europe, Africa and Asia.

Dubbed “Operation Demeter”, the initiative led to the confiscation of 30,000 tons of illegal waste between March and May this year, mainly in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. Around sixty countries are taking part in the operation which aimed at monitoring waste transportation in some 300 ports.

For five days, all waste transport freighters docked at the Belgian port of Antwerp were thoroughly checked, resulting in the seizure of 14 illegal cargoes.
