Belgium going up in smoke!
Smokers now make up 30 percent of the Belgian population.
5 December 2008
For the first time in six years, Belgium is seeing an increase in the number of smokers. The number of smokers is now at 30 percent.
Between 2002 and 2006, the number of smokers in Belgium remained more or less equal. However, last year's number of 27 percent is now 3 percent up, a large-scale poll shows.
30 percent of the people questioned admitted smoking on a daily basis. 48 percent of the respondents never smokes, 19 percent has smoked but has quit, and 3 percent occasionally lights a cigarette.
Luc Joossen of the Association for the Prevention of Cancer, is not surprised that the number of smokers has risen to 30 percent: "Over the last 30 years, we have seen that the number of smokers always grows if no preventive measures are being taken."
"In 2008, there was no tax increase on tobacco products, nor did the government introduce a complete smoking ban in pubs", Mr Joossen explains.
