BRUSSELS - Belgian sprinter Kim Gevaert has qualified for the semi-finals of the 200-metre woman's race at the Athens Olympics.

Belgium is now pinning its hopes on more medal success after it won gold in tennis and bronze in cycling and judo.

Gevaert ran third-fastest in the quarter finals, completing the race in 22.68 seconds, after Jamaican Veronica Campbell, 22.49, and Debbie Ferguson from the Bahamas who ran 22.53.

This evening, Gevaert must finish in the top four of her semi-final qualifier to reach the final.

She will be running in the second lane of the second race, which is judged to be a fair position.

Her biggest rivals will be Campbell, Ferguson, Jamaican Aleen Bailey and Cydonie Mothersill from the Cayman islands.

Tuesday will also see action on the horse-jumping course, where the Belgian team will compete for a place in Friday's final.

Medal hopes are running high for the Belgian riders, Philipaerts, Van Paeschen, Lansink and Demeersman.
