Belgium PM says Papandreou carries 'heavy responsibility'
Belgium premier Yves Leterme said Tuesday his Greek counterpart George Papandreou "carries a very heavy responsibility" after markets went into a tailspin following his referendum call.
"Markets need stability and security," Leterme told Belgian media.
"The decisions taken at last Wednesday's European summit were destined to restore confidence," he said.
Expressing surprise at the sudden decision to hold the vote, Leterme said, "Papandreou never mentioned it before, during or after the summit."
"The key thing is to check the breakage, check the fallout," he added.
"The Greeks have a right to a prospect of a better future, but they must also be aware that this is no longer a purely internal Greek problem."
