BRUSSELS — Belgian holidaymakers will again be seeking snow and sun during this year's Christmas festive season, tour operators Thomas Cook and Jetair said on Wednesday.

Thomas Cook said it has 42 sunshine-destination flights booked for the first weekend of the Christmas holiday period. Egypt and Morocco are increasing in popularity the most.

Among the cities, newcomers Marrakech (Morocco) and Luxor (Egypt) are performing well, newspaper 'De Standaard' reported on Wednesday.

However, the Canary Islands still remain the most popular sun holiday destination. Other top destinations are Hurghada (Egypt) followed by Tenerife and Sharm El Sheikh (Egypt).

Tourism to Thailand and Sri Lanka is undergoing a recovery after the tsunami disaster from last year. The weekly direct flight from Brussels to the Far East during the Christmas holiday period is completely full.

Reservations for snow holidays during the Christmas period are stable compared with last year. France remains the most popular destination, but has encountered a small drop in demand.

Austria is the second most favourite destination, followed by Switzerland. Bulgaria has overtaken Italy as a winter sport destination.

However, Bulgaria's rise is possibly due to the fact Thomas Cook is operating every Saturday from December to mid-March a direct flight to the capital Sofia.

In regards city trips, Southern European cities such as Barcelona and Lisbon are rising in popularity. The hotels are partially cheaper and the flight possibilities have been expanded.

However, the top three city destinations are Paris, London and Barcelona.

Jetair said its sun holidays are more popular this year compared with 2004. The top five Jetair destinations are Tenerife, Costa Blanca, Gran Canaria, Hurghada and the Dominican Republic.

The top five holiday destinations are Spain, Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco and the Dominican Republic.

France as a winter destination scored better with Jetair and the tour company's top five winter sport destinations are France, Austria, Germany, Switzerland and Italy.
