Belgian police seize arms, explosives in Albanian gang raid
Belgian police arrested 12 people and seized explosives and firearms in a series of raids on suspects linked to an Albanian crime gang, justice authorities confirmed.
BRUSSELS - Of those arrested, 11 were charged variously with taking part in a criminal enterprise and arms trafficking and were held in custody, the prosecutors office in the capital Brussels said.
The other suspect was to be heard by a judge.
The cache of weapons seized in the raids, which went off without incident, included 15 handguns and ammunition, one Kalashnikov automatic rifle, a riot gun, seven kilogrammes of C4 plastic explosives and 1.5 kilos of dynamite.
Grenades, bullet-proof vests and Albanian police uniforms were also found in the 22 separate raids, many of them in Brussels, prosecutors said, according to Belgian media.
The swoop was part of an investigation launched in 2008. The suspects, some of whom have already served jail time, have denied the charges.AFP/Expatica
