The Belgians will pick up six wounded Palestinian children and their relatives.

Belgium has sent a military aircraft to Egypt together with a team of doctors and medical equipment. The plane will evacuate children who were injured during the conflict in Gaza.

It took quite some time before the Belgian authorities received the go ahead for the mission, but François Delhaye of the Belgian Foreign Ministry confirmed that this arrived on Tuesday.

The Belgians will pick up six wounded Palestinian children and their relatives.

The children were brought to the Egyptian town of el-Arish on Tuesday.

It was the Palestinian Crescent that made use of the humanitarian pause in the fighting to bring the children to Egypt.

The World Heath Organisation selected the children on the basis of their medical condition.  Priority is being given to children with burns and/or multiple fractures.

The children coming to Belgium all have multiple fractures. They are expected to arrive at Melsbroek military airbase outside Brussels around 10p.m.

Belgium hopes to help more children soon.
