Nationwide transport ticket from 2010

From 2010, a combined ticket will be introduced for all types of public transport in Belgium. The ticket will be valid in all of the nation's regions following a deal struck on Wednesday. The chip card will be compatible with the ticketing systems used by the Flemish public transport company De Lijn (buses and trams), Wallonian counterpart TEC and Brussels transport authority MIVB-STIB. Brussels had earlier announced it will introduce a unified ticketing system for its train, tram, bus and metro network by the start of 2007.

Remmery death threat inquires completed

Investigations into the write of the anonymous death threats sent to the Ledegem delicatessen business Remmery have been rounded off without result. The Kortrijk public prosecution office questioned another 10 people in recent weeks, requesting also DNA material, but inquiries have proved the suspects innocent. Between November 2004 and March 2005, Remmery manager Rik Vannieuwenhuyse was sent seven death threats demanding the sacking of Moroccan employee Naïma Amzil for wearing a head scarf. Vannieuwenhuyse refused the demand.

61pc of restaurants breach hygiene law

Some 61 percent of restaurants and 67 percent of bakeries are in breach of general hygiene laws. Most breaches relate to the absence of obligatory self-inspection system. But the Federal Food Agency said being in breach of that obligation does not result in a temporary closure of the business. It also said there has been a favourable, but slow move towards the food safety and food product self-inspection system.

Cariat resigns in PS fraud scandal

Lucien Cariat has resigned as the chairman of the rubbish disposal depot ICDI in Charleroi. He made the decision known via his lawyer on Tuesday. The Charleroi City Council had decided last week to remove Cariat of his responsibilities as alderman. The Socialist PS politician is accused of forgery, abuse of social funds and embezzlement.
