The reconstruction of the Antwerp ring road cost almost EUR 140 million, 40 percent more than initially budgeted, Flemish Public Works Minister Kris Peeters has said.

Brussels families waste 31kg of food

Brussels households throw away 15,000 tonnes of food. A quarter of food thrown away is not even past its 'use by date'. Research shows that the average Brussels household throws away 31kg of food a year. Totalled together, this is enough to feed 30,000 people three meals each day for a year. Leftovers from meals account for 25.5 percent of food waste, 26.7 percent is food that has not past its use by date and 47.8 percent is out-of-date food, the Brussels Institute for Environmental Management said.

Serial rapist jailed

Ghent Court sentenced on Wednesday a serial rapist to five years jail and payment of damages. The man of Sint-Martens-Latem attacked more than 20 women. Meeting women via dating sites and personal ads, he went out to dinner with them and invited them back to his house. The man then drugged the women and raped them. He also filmed the crimes.

Sharp rise in winter sun holidays

The long winter has led to a strong rise in the number of Belgians taking sun holidays. Tour operator Jetair said it recorded last week double the amount of reservations for the rest of the winter season than recorded last year. Most of the holidays being booked are flights to sun-drenched destinations.

Beckham's ex-mistress on Flemish TV

Rebecca Loos, the alleged former lover of British soccer star David Beckham, will take part in the Flemish version of the reality TV show 'Temptation Island'. The show will air on commercial broadcaster VT4 starting in April. Loos, whose father is a Dutch diplomat, became famous in 2004 with her kiss-and-tell affair with Beckham in Spain.
