Belgium in house construction boom

Home loans for new construction houses increased by a hefty 40 percent in the first three months of this year compared with the same period in 2005. The rise is remarkable given the interest rates were at an historic low last year and have since increased slightly. Banks also reported a rise in the number or mortgages for the purchase of existing homes and renovations. More Belgians are choosing for a fixed interest rate.

74,000 .eu domain names blocked

EURid — which administers the .eu domain name system — has recently blocked 74.000 domain names. The action was taken on suspicion the owners only registered the websites names with the aim of reselling them to the highest bidder. EURid said such behaviour is abusive and prohibited. More than 2 million .eu domain names have been registered since December 2005.

Gevaert wins gold in 100m

Kim Gevaert has become the first Belgian in 35 years to win a gold medal at the European Athletics Championships. She easily won the 100m in a time of 11.06 seconds.
Two Russian sprinters took out second and third place. Gevaert ran a lap of honour draped in the Belgian flag after her win.
