BELGIUM - The Belgian Foreign Minister Karel De Gucht has expressed his joy at the arrest of the former Bosnian-Serbian leader and war crimes suspect Radovan Karadzic.

According to De Gucht, the arrest is "a strong indication" of the new government's seriousness in wanting to co-operate with the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague.

"Radovan Karadzic's arrest proves that those suspected of war crimes cannot eternally escape from international justice", De Gucht said.

"A free and fair trial must now contribute to end this most tragic chapter in recent European history," the Belgian Foreign Minister continued.

De Gucht said his thoughts were with the surviving relatives of Mr Karadzic' victims who had been waiting for this moment for many years.

The European Union has recently signed a co-operation treaty with Serbia that is generally considered as a first step to EU membership. At the request of both the Netherlands and Belgium, the treaty is only to be put into effect if Serbia shows its willingness to co-operate with the international tribunal in The Hague.
