OSTEND – Hops can provide missing skip to women suffering from disorders caused by the menopause, offering an alternative to hormone replacement therapy, according to Belgian researchers.

A firm in Ostend, working with researchers at the University of Ghent, has launched a product based on hops - better known as the base ingredient in beer - which it claims addresses the common problems of the female menopause, which include fatigue and emotional distress, brought about by changing hormone levels.

Biodynamics says its product, called Menohop, avoids the alleged side effects of hormone therapy treatment. It also claims that its research has shown that its hop extract reduces the increased risk of breast and uterine cancers following the menopause.

The firm has employed an extra 50 people to produce supplies of the product which it is planning to market worldwide.
