Belgian home after abduction in Iran

23 August 2007

ANTWERP – 37-year-old Carla Van den Eeckhoudt is back in Belgium. She landed at Zaventem airport on Wednesday. Her travelling companion Stefaan Boeve remains hostage in southern Iran.

Van den Eeckhoudt has arrived somewhat earlier than expected. Since her via for Iran expired she was no longer able to stay at the Belgian embassy in Tehran.

The Antwerp woman stayed at the embassy for about a week after being released by the Iranian bandits that took her and Boeve (27) hostage.

The two were run off the road a week ago last Sunday while en route from the Iranian city of Bam to the border with Pakistan. The bandits forced them to leave their car behind and enter the inhospitable border zone. The leader of the gang wanted to use them to get his brother released from prison.

Carla managed to convince her abductors to release her. Stefaan is still being held however.

The foreign affairs department says that Iranian authorities claim day after day that they are doing everything to secure Boeve's release, but Belgium has not been given any information on the progress of the negotiations.

For the time being it is uncertain when the Belgian man will be released.
