Belgian giraffes on a short holiday
Two giraffes from the Bellewaerde Park are being moved to the Netherlands for a short stay
Two giraffes from the Bellewaerde Park in Ieper (West Flanders) are being moved to the Netherlands for a short stay.
The giraffes, Margriet and Zuri, are being moved by special transport. They have to live somewhere else for a while during the renovation of their home in Belgium. Margriet will go to the Beekse Bergen and Zuri will go to Ekipa.
The transport of giraffes is a very precarious operation. They are so tall that they cannot lie down fully. Margriet and Zuri are about 5.5 metres long.
Further, giraffes are particularly vulnerable to stress and become unsettled easily. The animals were given tranquilizers a couple of days already.
The giraffes are being transported in specially designed trailers. Margriet is leaving first. It took considerable time and coaxing to get her into the van. Zuri will be moved to his new temporary home tomorrow.
The animals are expected to be back in Belgium by the beginning of the summer, in their newly renovated home.
