Belgian farmers dump thousands of litres of milk in protest

Dairy farmers from the Chimay region poured some 150,000 litres of milk onto a field in the area on Saturday. Other farmers held demonstrations in Nandrin, spilling 500,000 litres.

In Chimay, the milk had been collected beforehand from a large number of farms in the surrounding area. Sixty people, many of whom are close to the farmers, gathered to express their support for the dairy farmers who participated in the action.
The protests come as part of a wider dairy strike which has been going on for over a week.

In Nandrin, fifty farmers from the Liège region emptied a significant quantity of milk onto a field, estimated to be some 500,000 litres.

After the spillage of almost 3 million litres of milk last Wednesday near Ciney, farmers wanted to show that the dairy strike had not weakened.
