BRUSSELS – Belgian man Luc Brandt and his Dutch girlfriend have been arrested by Ethiopian police after a fatal accident last weekend. On Sunday the Belgian man hit a 14-year-old girl while driving his all terrain vehicle. The girl died on the scene, VTM news reports. The news has been confirmed by the ministry of foreign affairs.

A friend reports that Brandt and his girlfriend had been on a world trip for several months already. His holiday came to an abrupt end on Sunday when Brandt hit a 14-year-old girl with his vehicle. "The village inhabitants who saw the accident were outraged and threw stones at the vehicle," says the friend of the arrested man. Brandt and his girlfriend continued driving to the next village, where they reported the incident to police. The two were then arrested.

"They will probably have to appear in court soon," says the man. The Belgian embassy in the Ethiopian capital of Addis Ababa is in contact with the Belgian man, says François Delhaye, adjunct spokesperson at Foreign Affairs.

The ministry of foreign affairs says it has since learned that a financial settlement may have been reached with the victim's family. "At first it looked like a hit-and-run accident but that is no longer the case now that it is clear that they drove on to the next village for their own safety," says Delhaye. The Belgian and his Dutch girlfriend will remain in police custody pending the court decision.
