BRUSSELS - An advertising campaign staged by the Belgian animal rights' organisation GAIA on Monday won the gold medal at the London International Advertising Awards.

The campaign was developed by the advertising firm Duval Guillaume. Gold at the London International Advertising Awards is one of the most prestigious prizes in the advertising business.

The Belgian campaign was selected from 17,000 different entries from 80 different countries.

The Belgian animal rights' organisation GAIA staged the campaign last year in order to highlight the issue of pig castration without the use of an anaesthetic.

The campaign won in the category "integrated media".

The jury praised the campaign's innovative approach: "The way in which different media were combined and the results were unsurpassed".

The campaign also included a record “Why the Pain?" that was cut by a band especially formed for the occasion.

The campaign poster and card became real collector's items.
