Belgium - The first six months of 2008 were the worst ever for the Bel20, the blue chip index of the Belgian stock exchange.

The index is down 23 percent since the beginning of 2008.

The worst previous performance was recorded in 2002. During the second half of that year, the Bel20 which groups the shares of Belgium's 20 largest companies lost 20 percent of its value.

The Bel20 is setting another new record on Tuesday. It's the first time that the index has lost ground during four consecutive quarters. June’s loss of 15.3 percent is one of the top three worst trading months ever in Brussels.
