BRUSSELS — Antwerp Court jailed David Buelens and Cindy Croon for 30 years on Monday for the death of their seven-month-old baby.
The court convicted them on charges they intentionally beat and injured the baby, resulting in her unintended death. They also tortured her.
Baby X. died on 5 December 2002 after her skull was shattered. Medical tests also indicated she had suffered a broken arm, leg and six ribs prior to her death. She was also underweight and undersize for her age
The public prosecutor demanded the maximum 30-year jail term for Buelens, 30, and 27 years jail for Croon, 28.
"The birth of a child creates exceptional social expectations. Our society expects that parents will perform the support and upbringing with appropriate care and effort," president judge Marc Sterkens said.
"Both David Buelens and Cindy Croon have severely damaged and fundamentally shocked the trust that society placed in them."
Although the search was for drugs, the violence between Buelens and Croon and their personalities might explain the facts, the court also said they formed no excuse, newspaper 'De Standaard' reported.
Given the seriousness of the crime, the court considered it necessary that the sentence carry a sufficient preventative impact for possible similar crimes in future. Both defendants were given the maximum jail term.
Presiding judge Sterkens also had one final word for the defendants: "Work on yourself and remember that drugs offer no outlet and even less a solution to your problems".
