BRUSSELS - The prototype of the new Audi A1 model was presented to the workforce and the press on Tuesday. The vehicle will be produced at the Audi plant in Brussels starting in 2009.
Audi Brussels, the former Volkswagen plant in the Belgian capital, will be the sole producer of this car. The decision to unveil the new Audi now is no coincidence.
It's exactly one year ago that the then Volkswagen management announced a major restructuring operation involving major job losses.
In the future the Golf model will no longer be produced in Brussels.
Under the initial plans only 1,500 of the 6,400 employees would be able to keep their jobs.
After months of social unrest and an intervention by the Belgian Government the Volkswagen Group announced that the Audi A1 model would be produced exclusively in Brussels. The name of the plant in the borough of Vorst was changed to Audi Brussels.
The Audi A1 is the first really small car that Audi will assemble. By 2010 a hundred thousand A1s will be produced in Belgium.
The plant will employ 2,200 workers. They were the first to see the new model yesterday.
