BELGIUM - An asylum seeker fell off a crane from a height of 10 metres on Wednesday night after being persuaded by the police to do so.

The asylum seeker was brought to the hospital but is not in a critical condition.

A number of asylum seekers had climbed into cranes over the past week demanding for a residence permit.

Most of them came down of their own free will on Wednesday after a court ordered them to put an end to their protest. Police thought that all cranes at the building site at de Brouckère had been abandoned, but this was apparently not the case.

On Wednesday night, an asylum seeker managed to sneak in the building site and climb into a crane. The police eventually convince him to come down, but when he used a cable to do so, he lost his grip and fell down. The fire services came and rescued the man.

Most crane protesters at different Brussels locations have given up their protest, there are still some asylum seekers who are determined not to give up.
