ArcelorMittal closes Belgian blast furnaces: unions
World steel giant ArcelorMittal on Wednesday announced the closure of its two blast furnaces in Liege, once a key European steel-works town, trade union sources said.
"We have just been told the foundry is stopping," David Camerini of the CSC trade union told AFP.
Some 600 people are employed at the furnaces.
Another trade unionist, Francis Gomez of the FGTB metalworkers union, told the RTL-TV1 network that more than 1,000 people would lose their jobs at the furnaces as well as another steelworks.
ArcelorMittal management was not immediately available for comment.
Belga news agency said an emergency meeting was scheduled on Thursday.
